Enlightenment

Enlightenment

As a lotus flower is born in
water, grows in water and rises out of water to stand above it
unsoiled, so I, born in the world, raised in the world having overcome
the world, live unsoiled by the world

Buddha (563 – 483 BC)

This verse perfectly encapsulates enlightenment,  2,522 or so years later and still timeless.  The Gospel of Buddha explains:

And the Tathagata* is the same unto all beings,
differing in his attitude only
in so far as all beings are different.

* the Tathagata is beyond all coming and going – beyond all transitory phenomena. He is one who has found the truth.
